Tile Refinishing

Tile Refinishing

Tiles are a huge part of what makes your bathroom look good and feel relaxing. Everyone wants to always have their bathrooms looking and feeling clean. This is why having old stained dirty tiles is a huge hassle and a disturbance to all homeowners. Tile refinishing is the most practical way to reproduce the original tile look. Refinishing is a much better option than replacing the existing tiles. It is much more practical and also less expensive. Tile refinishing can be used on tile countertops, bathtub tile surrounds, and tile walls. This can save you up to 50% over the cost of replacement. The results can also be dramatic, especially for the price that you pay.

Tile Refinishing Process

Tile refinishing is a fast and easy way to renovate tiles without having to replace them completely. Refinishing allows you to make the most out of the tiles you already have while also getting a new look for your bathroom. This process is really straightforward and can be done easily by our refinishing professionals.

Step 1.

Consultation

Once you’ve decided that tile refinishing is the route you want to go for, our professionals will be scheduling a consultation with you. Although you may opt to buy tile refinishing kits to do it yourself, the results are not comparable. The chemicals included in these kits, such as the primer and topcoat, do not last as long as professional-grade chemicals. More importantly, these kits can be quite expensive. Having a professional deal with your tile refinishing saves you a lot of time and money while also ensuring the quality of the refinishing service.

Step 2.

Preparing the Room

Whether you’re refinishing your kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, or any other space in your house, it must still undergo the proper preparations for tile refinishing. Our professionals will tape off the areas that will not be refinished. They will then proceed to remove any dirt and debris from the surfaces to be refinished. A ventilation system is set up to direct the airborne odors out of the house. Any scent left after refinishing will quickly dissipate so it’s not something to worry about.

Step 3.

Repairing Damaged Tiles

One of the benefits of tile refinishing is that the damages in your tiles will be repaired prior to resurfacing. This is best if you have any small chips or cracks in your tile as our professionals can quickly fill those in and smooth them over. In instances where you may have completely missing tiles, they will be easily replaced with tiles on hand that are of the same size. Any grout in between the tiles that may have chipped or shrunk over the years will also be filled in. The goal of this process is to make sure your tiles look like they’ve just been placed even if they have been there for a while. When the topcoat is applied, the tiles will look as if they are in mint condition.

Step 4.

Etching the Tile

Etching tiles is a similar process to sanding wood before painting or staining it. This strips away the old finish of the tile and allows the primers and glazes to better adhere to the tile surface. This is an extremely crucial step to the refinishing process as this will determine how durable your tile is and how long it will last. If your surface is not prepared correctly, the topcoat will quickly chip off. This is another reason why you should have your tiles refinished instead of using DIY kits. DIY kits do not have the proper etching tools and using the provided tools leaves your surface with a lot of scratch marks. Professional tile refinishing is almost as durable as the tile’s original surface, giving you years of enjoyment for this investment.

Step 5.

Priming

Again, let’s think of tile refinishing as we would wood painting. After you finish with the etching (or sanding, in the case of wood painting), it is time to prime so that the paint sticks well with the surface. With tile refinishing, there are different kinds of primers that are specific to the kind of finish that you’d like to have. There are different applications as well. There are instances when the primer is brushed on, however, we do not really practice this as brush strokes may show through the topcoat. Instead, we use an airbrush machine to create a smooth, even surface that looks as similar to the original coating as possible.

Step 6.

Topcoat

The topcoat is the final step in the tile refinishing process. The topcoat is a shiny outer layer that looks and feels like a ceramic glaze. A lot of people also refer to the tile refinishing process as tile reglazing. However, tile refinishing doesn’t really reglaze the tile since the only way to do this is to re-fire it to a kiln. The whole point of the refinishing process is to avoid the cost of tile demolitions that are required in tile reglazing. The topcoat takes about a day to cure completely, however, you can already see what the finished product looks like in just a few hours. Make sure to avoid splashing any water to the surface that may keep it from drying. Our tile refinishing experts will personally provide you with aftercare instructions to preserve your new tile surface. It is important to follow these instructions so that your tiles will remain beautiful and durable at the same time.

Is It Worth It?

If you currently have tiles with surface imperfections that can still be salvaged, tile refinishing is the way to go. With tile refinishing, you get to spend significantly less than if you purchase new tiles. Purchasing new tiles doesn’t just include the cost of the tiles themselves, you’ll also have to factor in the cost of getting your old tiles removed and the new ones being installed. Tile refinishing makes the most out of the tiles that you already own and saves you from the cost and hassle of getting new ones.
